Herrasmiespanimo englannista: Fuller's!

Fuller'sista kun puhutaan, niin siitä puhutaan aina kunnioittavaan sävyyn. Pullojen ulkoinen olemus kertoo jo perienglantilaisesta tyylikkyydestä. Tätä ei kaadeta kurkkuun ihan miten sattuu! Pullojen muotoilu on vanhanaikainen ja tyylikäs ja etiketti on huoliteltu. Kaikki Fuller'sin oluet ovat samanlaisessa pullossa.
Panimon tiloissa on olutta pantu menemään jo 350 vuotta, mutta nykyisen nimensä se sai, kun vuonna 1845 panimon nykyinen omistus vakiintui John Fuller'sille ja panimomestarina toimi John Turner.
Panimolla on monia hienoja oluita, kuten klassikko Fuller's ESB.
Olen tässä koonnut informaatiota panimon olusista ja lisännyt vähän omiakin mietelmiä väliin.

Pääasia, eli hienot Fuller's oluet

London Pride

Tämä on keskioluen vahvuinen panimon perusolut. Maku on helpostilähestyttävä, mutta selvät Fuller'sille tyypilliset ominaisuudet löytyvät tästäkin. Tyylikäs, "pyöreä" ja tasapainoinen.. Englanniksi "rounded flavor" kuvastaa ehkä paremmin. Tämä ominaisuus on yhteistä Fuller'sin oluille.

Mutta tämä olut on se josta voi aloittaa, jos tuntuu että haluaa tutustua panimon oluihin järjestyksessä kevyimmästä vahvimpaan. Humalat target, Challenger ja Northdown ovat käytössä, yleisiä englantilaisissa, hedelmäisissä, aleissa.

Wikipedian tietoa Goldings-humalasta:

This is a group of traditional and very popular English aroma hops grown prior to 1790. Widely cultivated also in the U.S.A. C They are called East Kent Goldings if grown in East Kent, Kent Goldings if grown in mid-Kent, and Goldings if grown elsewhere in the U.K. There are many different named cultivars such as Amon's Early Bird, Cobbs, Bramling,Canterbury, Petham Rodmersham and in Worcestershire - Mathon. They tend to have a smooth, sweet flavour. Most types of Goldings will work in place of another (Whitbread Golding Variety for East Kent Goldings, e.g.). Note that Styrian Goldings are not of this family, they rather are identical to Fuggles.

Wikipedian tietoa Northdown-humalasta:

Dual purpose hop in England developed in 1970s. Relative of Challenger and Target. Very resiny. Substitutes: Phoenix or blend of Goldings and Brewers Gold.

Wikipedian tietoa Target-humalasta:

English mid-to-high alpha hop bred from Kent Goldings. Used in Wylam ale. Substitutes: Fuggle, Willamette.

Wikipedian tietoa Challenger-humalasta:

English hop. Introduced in 1972. Very popular dual-purpose hop in English ales. Used in many traditional English Bitters. When used for bittering, Challenger can impart a pleasant and complex marmalade/toffee/citrus flavour, which enhances strong ales. Substitutes: East Kent Goldings, Phoenix, Styrian Goldings, British Columbian Goldings.

ESB

Fuller'sin ESB on  klassikoksi haukuttu. Nimi on lyhenne Extra Special Bitteristä, ESB onkin yksi maukkaimmista ale-oluista englanninmaalla. Olut tuli markkinoille vuonna 1971 ja on sen jälkeen voittanut CAMRA:n Best Strong Ale palkinnon seitsemän kertaa, eli useammin kuin yksikään muu. CAMRA on englantilainen hyvän oluen ja pubikulttuurin puolestapuhuja. Olut on hyvin maukas, aika karamellinen maultaan. Vähän ehkä liian makea minun makuun, mutta oluen hienoutta ei voi olla noteeraamatta. Tosin maistamisesta on jokunen vuosi, täytyypä ottaa taas maistiin pitkästä aikaa. Olut on 5.9 prosenttista.

ESB has a wonderful rich mahogany appearance. Taking in the nose, the beer is bursting with cherry and orange, balanced by soft malty toffee and caramel notes. The flavour delivers everything you would expect from such a full-bodied ale. The unique blend of Northdown, Target, Challenger and Goldings hops imparts grassy, peppery notes on the tongue along with intense citrus fruit characters of grapefruits, oranges and lemons. The blend of Pale Ale and Crystal malts in the brew give a biscuity, toffee element to the beer. A smooth, mellow bitterness lingers on the palate to give a superbly satisfying finish.

Typically crystal malt is sold by colour, either labelled with the lovibond rating or as either dark,light or medium. Character and flavours can vary greatly among the different colored crystal malts and even from different manufactures. I think most would agree though crystal malt lends a caramel, toffee and sometimes nutty character as well as sweetness. A medium crystal will lend a deep reddish or ruby color to beer if used in moderate quantities. As well as barley other grains such as wheat and rye are also crystallized in this fashion.

Discovery

Tätä aika kevyttä Fuller's-olutta olen jostakin marketista kotiin joskus kantanut. Ihan ok, mutta jää kauas parhaimmista panimon oluisista. Kevyttä kesäjuotavaa. Olut on 4,5% vahvuista. Pullon etiketti kertoo oluessa käytetyn myös vehnää. Vehnän osuus on kuitenkin niin vähäinen ilmeisestikin, että vehnäolueksi sitä ei nimitetä.

Just on cool, out the bottle. Orange gold and sparkling with little in the way of carbonation. A Houdini head; now you see it, now you don’t. Aroma is sweet and reminiscent of orange toffee glaze, ripe peaches and apricot, and just a speckle of wheat. Sweetish start in the mouth. Nice, juicy citric flavours, tangy and zesty across the tongue with a subtley astringent bite in the back. Crisp, moderately bitter finish. Dusty malt and earthy hops give contrast to the fruity notes. A linger of what I can only describe as banana leaves builds as it goes. The body is good, or at least of what I expected from Fuller’s with prickly carbonation giving good bounce. Overall easy drinking ale that could benefit from being served chilled.

Organic Honey Dew

Sinänsä mielenkiintoinen hunajalla maustettu luomuolut on kuitenkin kuten edellinen. Kevyt ja helposti nautittava, eikä sellainen suuri olutnautinto mitä olutharrastaja useammin kaipaa. Nämä ovatkin Fuller'sin versiot lagerinjuojille ja kai näitä kesäkuumalla janoonsa voisi juodakin. 

Hunaja on ihan mielenkiintoinen kokeilu, mutta toisaalta makeudellaan peittää oluen omaa makua jokin verran. Kepoisa ja makea olut, jossa hallittu ja hillitty Fuller's maku taas muistuttaa olemassaolostaan. Olut on 5% vahvuista. Tällä hetkellä olutta ei alkosta saa.

Bottle: golden pour with small white head. Aroma is honey, wet cardboard and maybe a little orange blossom. Flavor is oddly soft with a little honey, malt and a very light cereal. Palate starts with a nice carbonation pop and some sweetness but fades quickly into thin and watery. Lacks flavor and palate to make me want more, just too watery.

London Porter

Tämä suklainen ja melko kevyt portteri on mielenkiintoinen näkemys portteri-oluesta. Yleensähän portterit ovat vahvoja, sekä maultaan ja vahvuudeltaan. It comes to the table in a proper English pint a solid dark brown color with beautiful ruby highlights when held to light. Creamy tan/brown head shows great retention and covers most of the glass on the way down. Smells heavy on the chocolate, but also has generous helpings of caramel, brown sugar, earthy, and mineral aromas. The flavor leans to the malty side with chocolate and caramel dominating the flavor. There's an earthy and mineral flavor that does nicely to cut through the malt and provide some balance. Medium body with a light to moderate level of carbonation and a creamy sweet mouthfeel. This is a really nice porter with a great expression of chocolate malt. I might have to drink more of these.

Ehkä kaikkein kuuluisin ja tunnetuin englantilainen humalalaji. Käytetään usein Golding-humalan kanssa "parantamaan juotavuutta, sekä pyöreyttä ja täyteläisyyttä suutuntumassa". Fuggle omaa kaikki tarvittavat ominaisuudet: Katkeron, maun ja tuoksun (Bitter, flavor, aroma). Fugglen suhteellisen alhainen alfahappopitoisuus tarkoittaa kuitenkin katkerohumaloinnissa suurta määrää kukintoja, että saadaan haluttu katkeruus. Fugglea käytetään myös kuivahumaloinnissa.

Tämä 150 vuotisjuhlaolut on todellinen huippu! Runsas humalointi ja maltaisuus ei vielä riitä, olutta on kypsytetty 100 päivää. Tämän jälkeen olut kypsyy vielä pullossa, eli pulloon laitetaan hiivaa ja sokeria pullotettaessa. Tämä luo eläväisen ja runsasmakuisen oluen.Todella hieno olut, jota ei kannata jättää maistamatta. Olut on 6.3% vahvuista.

Appearance: 3+ fingers off just off-white head. It's fluffy, thick and full of all kinds of different sized bubbles. The beer itself is copper colored with rich ruby shades when you put the glass in front of light. Fantastic clarity. Man, this looks so tasty.

Smell: Man, such a complex and subtle aroma. I get huge fruity, estery aromas. But what really hits me is the crusted bread malt aromas. And they smell good. Just tons of yeast. No hops are apparent but I really don't need them. 

Taste: Wow, this is really good. Every step of flavor as it travels over my palate is excellent and well balanced. I'll do the best I can to break them up. The first flavor I get is the really nice fruitiness. After that I get some big malt depth that includes the bready, crusty malts. Then it moves back to the fruits and touches on just a light peppery flavor. The beer itself finishes smooth with some chocolate and just the hint of hops. It's a stunner!

Finish: This is the only place that the beer falters. The body is fine, it's smooth and medium bodied. However the carbonation is a little too tight. As per other English beers I really think this would finish perfectly just slightly cool and with little carbonation. I guess when your beer is bottle conditioned that's probably hard to accomplish though, so I can't fault them too much.

Overall: A truly excellent and classic beer. It's been a while since I had a beer that is a must drink for anybody exploring the world of beer. Truly a classic and truly worth the acclaim.

Golden Pride

Tässä on panimon Barley wine, eli se vahva olut. Ohraviini. Makua on parinkin oluen verran, ollen kuitenkin panimolle tyypillisesti hillitty ja hallittu. Vaaleahko, maltainen, kohtuudella humaloitu, loistava olut taas kerran! Vahvuutta on 8,5%

Reddish copper body with an offwhite head. Minimal lacing and only some modest retention. Nose has rich caramel notes, a sligth breadiness and some dried darker fruit notes. Taste is similar and offers a bit more complexity - dried fruits and caramel notes dominate and establish a really solid and quite English malt profile. Modest sweetness and a subtle dryness and bitterness in the finish. A bit of alcohol is interwoven within the flavour, and adds some complexity. Excellent mouthfeel and completely smooth on the palate. An excellent English strong ale, and I'd certainly have this again.

Tätä olutta oli monopolissakin jokin aika sitten, toivottavasti ottavat taas valikoimiin. Hintaa oli hieman yli viisi euroa.

India Pale Ale

Tämä taitaa olla panimon uusimpia tulokkaita. Maussa on samaa karamellista makeutta kuin ESB:ssä, mutta IPA:lle tyypillinen voimakas humalointi tuo mukavasti sille vastapainoa. Todella hyvä olut ja maukas! Usein IPA:t ovat omaan suuhun liian katkeria,mutta tässä on kaikki humalointi laitettu prikuulleen nappiin. Ehkä tämä onkin enemmän vaan bitter, tai ale, kuin perinteinen IPA. Olut on 5,3% vahvuista.

Considering that IPAs are some of my least favourite beers (the American versions), this was quite a remarkably good experience. Very mellow, seductive, sweet aroma, nothing of the pungent fruitiness one would expect from an IPA. I’ve no idea whether the Griffin Brewery uses copper kettles, but at least in appearance the copper/amber colour does indicate that this would be a faithful version of a true India Pale Ale. Flavours are crisp, a bit more fruity, with citrus and raspberry - yes, I could taste it: raspberries! This ale is another good example of an intelligent use of hops (as opposed to the London Pride). Even if it’s not a true IPA, it’s great beer.

Tässä panimon omat maininnat vintage aleista vuosilta 1997-2008:

Vintage Ale 1997

Brewed on 18th May and 22nd July 1997 this is the first in the portfolio of Vintage Ales. Dark in appearance, the taste is almost brandy like with a hint of fruitiness in the aroma.

Vintage Ale 1998

The second in the series, this Vintage Ale was based on a Champion theme with the addition of Champion Alexis malt and Champion Northdown aroma hops. The result is a sweet, warming, creamy ale that is beautifully balanced.

Vintage Ale 1999

The Champion theme was used once again for this classic Vintage Ale with Champion Fuggles and Champion Optic malt. Slightly redder in appearance, this ale is full of body with a sherry-like flavour.

Vintage Ale 2000

85,000 bottles of Vintage Ale were produced with an organic theme, using Champion Optic Malt and Organic Target Hops. A fresh hop aroma with notes of honey and toffee, leads to a slightly sweeter taste and burnt, bitter aftertaste.

Vintage Ale 2001

Only 30,000 bottles were produced and packaged of this ‘back to tradition’ based brew. Maris Otter malted barley malt was used to create this wonderful golden ale that delivers a lingering bitterness full of flavour.

Vintage Ale 2002

As the year of the Golden Jubilee the golden theme was applied to this special commemorative Vintage Ale. Goldings hops and Golden Promise malt were used to produce this copper coloured ale with a fruity, orange peel aroma and a spicy, satisfying taste.

Vintage Ale 2003

50,000 bottles were brewed using a traditional recipe of Target, Challenger and Northdown hop varieties. The taste is rich with notes of marmalade, raisins and Christmas cake; the spicy hops well balanced with a pleasant bitterness.

Vintage Ale 2004

95,000 bottles were produced for 2004's Vintage, which once again employed a traditional approach, this time brewed with Goldings hops and Maris Otter malt. Distinctive cherry notes are evident, before a warming finish that mellows with age.

Vintage Ale 2005

This Vintage has spicy and peppery notes on the nose followed by a hint of toffee and vanilla. An incredibly well rounded beer, the malt flavours are softened by the spicy, citrus notes from the Fuggles hops.

Vintage Ale 2006

This full-bodied vintage is brewed with Fuggles and Super Styrian hops that create a tapestry of rich, spicy flavours. Orange, citrus and fruitcake notes are all present, and are balanced well with the biscuity, creamy malt flavours leaving a soft and warming finish.

Vintage Ale 2007

A classic Vintage Ale with an aroma which incorporates spicy hop notes with rich fruit character and leads on to a very full malty, fruity, sweet palate which has a surprisingly clean finish coupled with a matching bitterness.

Vintage Ale 2008

Our 12th Vintage features two of our favourite English hop varieties, Northdown and Challenger. These, combined with floor malted Maris Otter malt, produce a rich fruit aroma laced with dark orange hop notes. A full luxurious mouthfeel is finished off with a satisfying alcohol warmth.

HSB

HSB is brewed with the finest malt and hops for a well-balanced character. It is full bodied and silky textured, with a hint of Dundee cake that leads to a rich, fruity taste and a silky smooth finish. It has an ABV of 4.8% and is a beer to savour.

Seafarers Ale

Seafarers is brewed to 3.6% abv and is a delicious, thirst quenching ale. The secret of the hugely satisfying, refreshing taste of this light, amber beer is in the blend of finest quality English malt, Admiral hops and the unique Gales yeast.

Well developed fruity malt flavours and gentle bitterness sail through to a satisfying hoppy finish.

Chiswick Bitter

At 3.5% ABV in cask, this brew boasts a refreshing, highly drinkable flavour, flowery and fresh, with very well developed hop characteristics (a mixture of the Northdown and Challenger varieties). In 1999, the brewing team at Fuller's, adhering strictly to Chiswick's closely guarded recipe, further refined the brewing process, so that the beer settles more compactly resulting in a more consistent and better tasting beer which is cleaner and fresher. As any Chiswick fan will tell you, the dry hopping (with Goldings hops) really sings out!

Bengal Lancer

Bengal Lancer is an exciting, classic India Pale Ale from Fuller's. Brewed to 5% ABV (5.3% in bottle), this ale has been inspired by the history and character of this traditional style of beer.

Bengal Lancer has returned to pumps for an extended period between Autumn 2011 and Spring 2012.

The beer is pale in colour, full-bodied with a distinctive hoppiness that marks it out as a true India Pale Ale.

Brewer's Reserve

On this occasion this superb beer has been aged in Auchentoshan whisky casks for over 800 days; this extensive maturation time has infused the beer with delicious vanilla, warm honey and spicy ginger flavours. These combined with the rich malt body and pleasant sharp fruitiness derived from the beer, result in a wonderfully complex and very satisfying beer.

The beer will be available to order online in August, but was first released on draught at the Fuller's bar at the 2011 Great British Beer Festival. Only one firkin was released for sale each day and queues very quickly formed.

Mighty Atom

Mighty Atom is our brand new 2.8% beer, launched in October 2011.

The new beer was exclusively released to selected Fuller’s pubs before being made available to the entire estate and to free trade and national account customers.

Mighty Atom has a rich, light caramel character, while a heady dose of five different hops brings in floral grapefruit and plum notes, with a spicy overtone.

Summer Ale

Summer Ale is light, smooth, pale gold in colour, and highly refreshing served chilled. Brewed with malted wheat for crisp, biscuity flavours, and balanced by dry Czech Saaz hops, this excellent ale delivers a wealth of flavours. Summer Ale is an occasional brew, available at selected pubs and events during the summer months.

Available in many Fuller's pubs and selected freehouses.

Wild River

This superb double hopped beer, brewed to 4.5% ABV, uses a unique blend of four American hops imported from the West Coast - Liberty, Willamette, Cascade and Chinook . The result is a beer bursting with citrus hop flavours that are sure to leave you wanting more. The beer will be available exclusively to Fuller’s pubs, with some selected free trade pubs stocking the beer later in the season.
